D.C., Allsopp top Union for first win since June
Soccer Betting Lines
08/22/2010 -
Washington, D.C. (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Danny Allsopp scored twice and D.C. United
beat the Philadelphia Union, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at RFK Stadium to snap a
five-game losing streak and nine-match winless run in Major League Soccer.
Allsopp scored in each half, as United (4-14-3) won for the first time since a
3-2 win over Seattle Sounders FC in early June to give interim coach Ben Olsen
his first victory.
Olsen replaced Curt Onalfo following a 3-0 defeat to Real Salt Lake on July 31
and lost his first two games for the team he played with from 1998-2009.
The Union (4-11-5) won their first-ever game against United in April, 3-2, but
were shutout for just the fourth time this season as their winless run reached
six matches.
Philadelphia had the first real chance of the match through Sebastian Le Toux,
who leads the team with nine goals and nine assists, in the sixth minute. He
opened space against Jed Zayner in the penalty area, but United rookie goalie
Bill Hamid made a strong save.
United opened the scoring inside 22 minutes when Allsopp pounced on a mistake
by Union defender Danny Califf. D.C. rookie Andy Najar drove a cross in from
the right wing and Califf slipped as he tried to clear. The ball deflected off
Califf to an open Allsopp, and he easily slotted into the bottom-left corner.
Philadelphia had chance late in the first half to tie the match, but Califf's
effort off a free kick deflected off teammate Fred on a crowded goal line.
Santino Quaranta curled a good chance for United just around the right post
from 18 yards early in the second half, and Allsopp followed with his second
goal in the 63rd.
Najar helped create the goal with a run down the right. He then slipped a pass
across the top of the 18, where Pablo Hernandez dummied the ball to let it run
to Allsopp, and he hit a left-footed shot past Union goalie Chris Seitz.
Jaime Moreno nearly capped United's win with his 133rd career goal in stoppage
time but missed wide left.
Hamid finished with three saves for his first MLS shutout.
Philadelphia plays its next MLS game on Saturday at the New England Revolution
and D.C. visits Chivas USA on Aug. 29.

Academy Award Betting Odds for Best Picture Offer Great Value
If there is any category that is not an obvious win for any one nominee in this year's Academy Awards, it would be for Best Picture. Sure the Departed is a 5/7 favorite, but that's hardly anything when we look at Helen Mirren and her "out-of-reach" 1 to 40 odds (which means you would win a whopping $1 for every $40 bet).
For value, take a look at MySportsbook.com Oscars betting odds on my personal favorite, The Queen - a remarkable 12 to 1 long shot. The film hasn't won any pre-awards for Best Picture (compared to The Departed and Little Miss Sunshine), but there is a tremendous following and it is a strong enough film to warrant a surprise win.
TV Guide advises Oscar watchers should be cautioned not to discount the drama "Babel" with its strong social themes about overcoming communication gaps among people of different cultures.
"While 'Babel' lost several guild awards to 'Sunshine' and 'Departed,' it still enjoys loyal support, and historically Oscar voters favor dramas with social messages over comedies like 'Sunshine' and violent crime movies like 'Departed'."
"It hasn't done well in the guilds, which means there isn't much industry support," said Tom O'Neil of awards site TheEnvelope.com, "But several critics are expecting it to win, and that gets my attention." Babel had 7 to 2 odds at press time.
Who is to say independently produced Little Miss Sunshine won't be this year's Crash. Last year, Crash won for Best Motion Picture, shocking those who bet on gay cowboy flick, Brokeback Mountain, as the favorite to win.
