Irish to try their luck in Big East clash with third-ranked Wildcats
NCAA Basketball Betting Lines
01/27/2010 -
Philadelphia, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The third-ranked Villanova Wildcats
welcome the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to Philadelphia for what figures to be
an entertaining Big East Conference battle.
Notre Dame halted a two-game losing streak on Saturday with an 87-77 decision
over DePaul. The Fighting Irish are now 15-5 overall, including 4-3 in league
play, and only one of their 15 wins has come in a true road affair. Notre Dame
has a pair of two-point losses on its record, but there have been some narrow
victories as well.
As for Villanova, it has put together its second nine-game win streak of the
season, enabling the squad to move to 18-1 overall. The lone loss occurred
against local rival Temple, which is now nationally-ranked. On Saturday, the
Wildcats moved to 7-0 in the Big East with an 81-71 victory over St. John's on
the road.
Villanova owns a 17-14 series advantage over Notre Dame, which includes a
77-60 victory over the Irish last season.
Notre Dame's Luke Harangody deserves to be considered for national player of
the year honors, as the rugged forward is scoring 24.7 ppg to go along with
9.9 rpg. While Harangody is clearly the focus on offense for the Irish, he
does get some help from a pair of double-digit scorers. Tim Abromaitis checks
in with 16.7 ppg on 54.9 percent shooting from the field, including 49.6
percent accuracy from three-point range. As for Ben Hansbrough, he provides
11.7 ppg and 103 assists. UND is racking up 80.6 ppg while allowing 71.0 ppg
to opponents. In the recent victory over DePaul, Harangody scored 24 points
and grabbed 11 boards, but he was overshadowed by a 30-point effort from
Abromaitis, who shot 5-of-9 from three-point range. Hansbrough posted 15
points and 10 rebounds, while Tyrone Nash added 13 points and 10 boards. A
28-5 edge in points from the foul line was key to the Notre Dame victory.
Villanova is led by standout guard Scottie Reynolds, as he is scoring 18.7 ppg
on the strength of his 42.4 percent shooting from three-point range and 80
percent efficiency from the foul line. More than just a scorer, Reynolds is
handing out 3.4 apg, trailing only Corey Fisher (4.2 apg) in that category.
Fisher is scoring 13.1 ppg, and Antoinio Pena provides 10.7 ppg and 7.5 rpg.
The Wildcats are generating 84.9 ppg while limiting opponents to 70.4 ppg on
39.5 percent shooting. A positive rebounding differential of over seven boards
per contest has certainly helped the cause. Reynolds netted 19 points against
St. John's on Saturday, and Fisher pitched in with 18. As for Maalik Wayns, he
contributed 16 points off the bench for the 'Cats, who connected on 50 percent
of their field goal attempts and limited the Red Storm to 39.3 percent.

Sportsbook betting odds favor Europe in Ryder Cup
September 19, – Despite holding a decided edge in the all-time series, with 24 wins, 2 ties and 10 losses, Team USA is the underdog again heading into the Ryder Cup in Kidare, Ireland this weekend, according to MySportsbook.com. The Europeans have captured four of the past five editions, including their largest victory ever, an 18 ½ to 9 ½ thumping in Michigan in 2004. Current Ryder Cup betting odds favor the Europeans to continue their winning ways; they are a 4-5 bet to take the title, compared to 6-5 for the Americans.
Despite being knocked out in the first round of World Match play by Shaun Micheel, Tiger Woods is predicted to lead the US charge and be their highest point scorer for the week, with odds listed at 9-4 that he outpoints all other American players, including Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson and Chris DiMarco to name a few. Team USA has four relatively unknown players on the roster but all four are 2007 tournament winners and have posted some of season’s best performances, each earning over $1.5 million on the PGA TOUR. They include Zach Johnson, Vaughan Taylor, JJ Henry and Brett Wetterich.
The experienced European squad includes the likes of Luke Donald, Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington, Jose Maria Olazabal and Darren Clarke, who’s emotions will be tested after the passing of his wife to a battle with cancer. Donald and Garcia are in particularly good form and each is a 5-1 bet to lead the European squad in the points race. Donald has proven he can go head to head with Woods at a major event after a run for the $1.2 million purse at the PGA Championship. Garcia’s Ryder Cup credentials prove he’s ready for battle too.
