Illinois upends Lucas-less MSU

NCAA Basketball Betting Lines

02/07/2010 - Champaign, IL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Demetri McCamey posted 22 points and 11 assists, as Illinois held on to upend fifth-ranked Michigan State, 78-73, at Assembly Hall.

Mike Davis added 16 points for the Illini (16-8, 8-3 Big Ten) and got a piece of a potential game-tying three in the closing moments. D.J. Richardson provided 14 points as Illinois won its fourth consecutive game.

Draymond Green had 17 points and 16 boards for the Spartans (19-5, 9-2), who were playing without leading scorer Kalin Lucas because of an ankle injury he suffered in Tuesday's loss at Wisconsin.

Chris Allen added 15 points and Durrell Summers had 11 in the loss.

In a tie game inside the final two minutes, Illinois took the lead on a layup by Brandon Paul with 1:19 to go, though Paul missed the subsequent free throw. After a turnover by each team, McCamey drained a three with 39 ticks left to boost the Illini lead to 73-68.

Michigan State battled back, though. First Green was in the right place at the right time to tip in a ball, and after Richardson sank 1-of-2 at the line, Summers' three with 17 seconds left got the Spartans within 74-73.

Richardson was then fouled and sank both attempts for a three-point game, but Summers had the ball with a chance to tie. However, Davis played tight defense and got a fingertip on the ball, which never made it to the rim. Davis then slammed at the other end to seal the win.

The Illini jumped out to a 14-4 lead, but the Spartans followed with a run of their own, and Isaiah Dahlman's layup with 11:51 left in the half made it a 16-16 game.

Illinois edged back out in front, though Austin Thornton's jumper at the buzzer got MSU within 35-34 at the break.

The second half was back-and-forth, as each team held the lead. Raymar Morgan sank two free throws with 1:44 left to make it a 68-68 contest.

Big 12 Conference betting odds

Work left to do: Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Kansas State

Texas joins Texas A&M and Kansas as locks after getting league win No. 11. Texas Tech greatly helped its own hopes and crippled OK State's with the two-point win Saturday. Is K-State the last reasonable hopeful? Could be an elimination match in Stillwater on Tuesday, at least for the Cowboys.

Work left to do:

Texas Tech [18-11 (7-7), RPI: 44, SOS: 12] A critical two-point win over OK State leaves the Red Raiders with Baylor and at Iowa State left. Get both and the Red Raiders likely are good to go. Get one and there could be some interesting comparisons with a K-State team that could finish two or three games "ahead" of them in the standings but doesn't have any of the quality wins Texas Tech has. Not a lot in nonconference play (against Arkansas in Little Rock being the best win, by far) to lean on.

Oklahoma State [18-9 (5-8), RPI: 50, SOS: 35] Still without a road win, the Cowboys now need to win two on the road just to get to .500 in conference play. It's hard to recall a team (OK, other than Clemson) falling so precipitously from lock status to almost certainly out of the NCAAs at this point. There are wins to be had in the last three, including a very big home game against K-State on Tuesday, but this team is reeling. Can you tell the pressure to win is getting to them with the way the final possession played out at Texas Tech? There are some good nonconference performances to lean on, specifically beating Missouri State and Syracuse on neutral floors and Pitt in OK City, but if the Pokes don't right this very, very soon, that won't be enough.

Kansas State [20-9 (9-5), RPI: 56, SOS: 96] It pays to be in the Big 12 North. The nine league wins are Colorado (twice), Missouri (twice), Iowa State (twice), Baylor, Nebraska and (a good one against) Texas. That helps explain the middling computer profile. The win over USC is nice, but the nonconference leaves a lot to be desired. The game at OK State in Stillwater on Tuesday is huge, as it could KO the Cowboys and leave K-State with a home date against Oklahoma with which to work.

Sportsbook betting odds favor Europe in Ryder Cup

September 19, – Despite holding a decided edge in the all-time series, with 24 wins, 2 ties and 10 losses, Team USA is the underdog again heading into the Ryder Cup in Kidare, Ireland this weekend, according to MySportsbook.com.  The Europeans have captured four of the past five editions, including their largest victory ever, an 18 ½ to 9 ½ thumping in Michigan in 2004. Current Ryder Cup betting odds favor the Europeans to continue their winning ways; they are a 4-5 bet to take the title, compared to 6-5 for the Americans.

Despite being knocked out in the first round of World Match play by Shaun Micheel, Tiger Woods is predicted to lead the US charge and be their highest point scorer for the week, with odds listed at 9-4 that he outpoints all other American players, including Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson and Chris DiMarco to  name a  few.  Team USA has four relatively unknown players on the roster but all four are 2007 tournament winners and have posted some of season’s best performances, each earning over $1.5 million on the PGA TOUR.  They include Zach Johnson, Vaughan Taylor, JJ Henry and Brett Wetterich.

The experienced European squad includes the likes of Luke Donald, Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington, Jose Maria Olazabal and Darren Clarke, who’s emotions will be tested after the passing of his wife to a battle with cancer.  Donald and Garcia are in particularly good form and each is a 5-1 bet to lead the European squad in the points race. Donald has proven he can go head to head with Woods at a major event after a run for the $1.2 million purse at the PGA Championship. Garcia’s Ryder Cup credentials prove he’s ready for battle too.
