Flyers top Thrashers to halt nine-game skid

Hockey Betting Lines

01/29/2007 - Atlanta, GA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Jeff Carter's goal with 1:02 left in the third period sent the Philadelphia Flyers to a 2-1 win over the Atlanta Thrashers at Philips Arena.

Carter also scored a second-period goal for the Flyers, who avoided their second 10-game losing skid of the season. Antero Niittymaki stopped 37 shots to post his first win since November 30th.

Ilya Kovalchuk netted his 27th goal of the season for the Thrashers, who lost for the second time in six games. Kari Lehtonen made just 21 saves.

Carter picked up his second of the day and sixth of the season with 1:02 left in regulation, as he one-timed Mike Richards' goal line pass at the right circle and hit the net just underneath the crossbar.

"We played back-to-back all year -- it's not something we worry about," said Carter about any negative effects from Saturday's loss to the Rangers. "We come in here every game and try to put in our best effort. I think lately we've been really battling. We've had a lot of close games and we haven't been able to pull any out. So it's definitely a good thing to come in here and get two points."

Kovalchuk put the Thrashers up 1-0 with 8:39 left in the first, as his wrister from the right circle through a screen trickled off Niittymaki's glove and into the net.

The Flyers would kill off a 5-on-3 power play in the early stages of the second period, then tie the game on the man advantage with 8:17 left in the frame as Carter popped a shot over Lehtonen from outside the crease. The chance was set up by Geoff Sanderson, who worked the puck loose from a scrum along the left boards, and the resurgent Kyle Calder, who hit Carter with a quick lead pass.

Kovalchuk narrowly missed his second of the game with a minute played in the third period, but his shot from the inner edge of the left circle ticked off the far post and under Niittymaki.

The Flyers netminder would survive several more close calls down the stretch as Atlanta pressed for the go-ahead goal before Carter's tally broke the tie.

"Special teams killed us again tonight," said Thrashers captain Scott Mellanby. "They had a power play goal, and we didn't score on the power play. We were 5-on-3 for almost two minutes, and it's frustrating. We've got to figure out some ways to get it done. 5-on-3 can really turn a game around, and it's hurt us again."
