Burnett has tough act to follow in Yanks' finale with Rays
Baseball Betting Lines
04/11/2010 -
(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - A.J. Burnett tries to duplicate CC Sabathia's scintillating
performance from Saturday when the New York Yankees go for a series win in
this afternoon's rubber match of their three-game set with the Tampa Bay Rays
at Tropicana Field.
Burnett, who did not get a decision in his season debut against Boston on
Tuesday, dominated the Rays last year, going 4-0 with a 1.97 earned run
average in five starts against them. For his career he is 11-4 with a 2.77 ERA
against Tampa.
The right-hander has also fared well at the Trop, where he is 5-2 lifetime
with a 2.05 ERA in 10 starts. He has also recorded two of his 20 complete
games in the building.
However, as good as Burnett has been against the Rays, he will have a hard
time trying to match what Sabathia did on Saturday. The big left-hander lost a
no-hitter with two outs in the eighth inning of the 10-0 Yankees' win on Kelly
Shoppach's line-drive single to left.
Sabathia's (1-0) line read one hit, two walks and five strikeouts over 7 2/3
innings. He was pulled after the hit from his former battery mate in Cleveland
after throwing 111 pitches, 69 of those strikes.
Sabathia was bidding for the first Yankee no-hitter since David Cone's perfect
game against Montreal on July 18, 1999. The last Yankee lefty to toss one was
another perfect game effort, this one from David Wells on May 17, 1998 against
Minnesota.
"You know right away," Sabathia said of chasing history. "You know if you have
to pitch out of the stretch. I knew I hadn't given up any baserunners."
Robinson Cano had a two-run homer and RBI single for New York, which lost the
opener of this three-game series, 9-3, on Friday. Brett Gardner recorded two
hits, two RBI, two runs scored and walked once in the win.
Mark Teixeira snapped an 0-for-17 slump to begin the season -- the longest
drought of his career -- with an RBI double in the fifth and ended 3-for-4
with a walk and two runs scored.
Wade Davis was charged with four runs on seven hits and four walks in a six-
inning start for Tampa Bay, which had won three of its first four games to
begin the season. The Rays' bullpen was responsible for six earned runs on
seven Yankee hits and walked four.
Heading to the hill for the Rays today will be righty James Shields, who did
not get a decision in his Opening Day start against the Baltimore Orioles.
Shields gave up three runs and nine hits in six innings of his team's 4-3 win
on Monday.
Shields, though, has struggled mightily against the Yankees, going a miserable
1-7 with a 6.00 ERA in nine starts. Tampa has also lost all four games at home
to the Yankees when Shields has been on the hill.
New York took 11 of the 18 meetings between the clubs last season, including
five of the nine matchups at the Trop.
