Angels hold off Dodgers in wild ending
Baseball Betting Lines
06/24/2010 -
Anaheim, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Joel Pineiro allowed just one run in 7 1/3
frames, and the Los Angeles Angels continued to win at the expense of their
cross-town rival with a 2-1 victory over the Dodgers.
Pineiro (7-6) allowed just six hits and a walk while fanning five for the
Angels, who have taken all five meetings with the Dodgers this season. The
Halos made the most of their four hits, and Howie Kendrick notched his 28th
RBI in a span of 26 games.
Brian Fuentes picked up his 12th save of the season despite putting the first
two batters on base in the ninth. The Dodgers looked to have the game-tying
run in the final frame, but Russell Martin was thrown out at second trying to
go back to the base before pinch-runner Reed Johnson could cross the plate on
a Jamey Carroll single.
Matt Kemp's RBI double provided the lone offense for the Dodgers, losers of
six straight. Rafael Furcal returned after missing five games due to the death
of his father and went 0-for-4 and committed two fielding errors, leading to
an unearned run.
John Ely (3-5) was victimized by the errors after yielding just two runs --
one earned -- on three hits and two walks in seven strong frames. He struck
out six.
Fuentes came in to save the game, and Kemp reached when Brandon Wood's throw
to first was off-line. Ronnie Belliard followed with a pinch-hit single to put
the tying run in scoring position.
Casey Blake struck out, and the Dodgers' bad luck continued when Kemp was
picked off at second base following an excellent move from Fuentes. It proved
to be costly, as Martin drew a walk to move pinch-runner Johnson to second.
Carroll came on to pinch-hit, and he lofted a bloop single to shallow left.
Johnson rounded third to try to score the tying run, but Juan Rivera threw out
Martin trying to go back to second for the final out. Johnson didn't score
before the out was recorded, ending the game.
The Dodgers, like they did on Tuesday, scored the game's opening run in the
third inning.
Andre Ethier reached on a one-out infield single, and Manny Ramirez followed
with another base hit. After James Loney popped out, Kemp doubled to plate
Ethier for a 1-0 lead.
But as they also did on Tuesday, the Dodgers gave away their lead, as the
Angels scored single runs in the fourth and fifth to move in front for good.
Kevin Frandsen led off the fourth with a double, moved to third on a ground
ball and scored on Furcal's fielding error. Mike Napoli doubled to start the
fifth, went to third on a sacrifice and scored on Kendrick's groundout for a
2-1 advantage.
That's all Pineiro and the Angels would need. Following the third inning, the
Halos' starter set down the next 13 hitters to get through the seventh. He
ended his outing with a walk to Ethier, but Kevin Jepsen came in and retired
two consecutive batters to maintain the one-run lead.
